Museum Studies

In spite of the heavy rain (again), Jake had a superb day out. He went to the Bishop Museum where he met his pal Odin. They learned about "the biggest shark that ever lived," the Megaladon, and played with some cool lava machines. They topped it off with some running around the great lawn and puddle jumping. Judging from the amount of giggles, we're guessing they liked the puddle jumping best.

Oh What a Busy Day (It Was...)

Busy day for the Jakers.

Picked up the sleeping tot at 3:00. Again, I was told he'd been sleeping for 2 hours. Yeesh, his sleeping habits have changed in the past couple of days.

Picked up Mom and went to Ala Moana where we got the obligatory "Pic With Santa". In all honesty, everyone working there, including Santa, was pretty dour. Completely disinterested and not full of joy whatsoever. I think Jake sensed this b/c he cried and seemed to hate the whole experience. He would usually be quite curious, but Santa was not making anyone feel like it was the holidays. Pic came out OK though...

As these pix reveal, perusing the vacuum cleaners at Sears was a MUCH more enjoyable experience. He grabbed a detachable brush from the Dyson Roller model and cleaned the whole vacuum section. Seriously.

I Read, I Eat

"He took a nap at 10 (am) and slept for 3 hours."
This is what ajumma told me when I picked up the Jakester at 3:00 this afternoon. This of course meant he wasn't sleeping in the late afternoon like he usually does. So I put him in the car and, as usual, he pointed and grunted at what he wanted to play with. I haven't cleaned the car in a while, so he had a lot of choices: my gym bag, a baby blanket from his days as an infant, CDs, a book, and other assorted chatskis. He pointed at the book and said "boo!" The book it was. He read it all the way to Kahala Mall where we stopped to say hello to nana. Granted, as the picture demonstrates, the book was upside down, but that just reveals Jake's genius. Upside down? I can still read it.

In the evening he met a bunch of aunties and uncles for dinner at Kona Brewing Company. After a meal of veggie pizza and a broiled fish sandwich, he played and had fun with everyone. He fell asleep 5 minutes after hitting his car seat.

It rained all day today, a Kona low that brought typhoon-esque winds and rain to Oahu.

The Cleaner

By far the highlight of Jake's day was his date with the vacuum cleaner. These days he's obsessed with the thing. When he comes home the first place he goes is to the closet. He points until someone takes it out. He then proceeds to make whirring noises while mocking like he's cleaning the floor or the table and giggles uncontrollably.

He definitely feels better health-wise today.

Daily Jake, Day One

This is a blog about Jake, for Jake. Since before he was born I've been writing occasional notes to him about his life, my life, his mom's life. My hope is that sometime down the road I can give him all of the things I've written for/to him so that he'll have a better understanding of who he is and where he comes from.

I got the idea to start this blog while sitting in my miserably cold little research carrel at the library writing chapter 2 of my dissertation. I originally planned on doing an interactive blog on music memory and nostalgia, which I still may do, but at the moment this seems more fun.

The plan is to take a photo or video of Jake (or to steal one from his aunties, uncles, and other friends) once a day and write a short blurb of a major event in his day. The majority of the pics will be taken with my phone, which will explain the low quality. I did this for a year once on a calendar in, I think, 1990 (sans the pics). I learned a lot about myself and I hope Jake does too. Who knows, maybe he can take this over some day. Hopefully the pictures will tell a story too. I can't help but think of Harvey Keitel's Auggie Wren character in Wayne Wang's Smoke taking a picture of the smoke shop corner for years. There is power in memory, whether it be joy, sadness, or melancholy. I hope Jake experiences it all through his photographs.

A caveat: Although the plan is once a day, it'll most likely be 5-6 times a week. It's his fault. He keeps us busy.

As I write this Jake is sleeping on the bed next to me. These days he sleeps in the afternoon, around 3:00, for about 2 hours. Today's pic is Jake catching Zs on the bed. He's wheezing because he has a cold. Major runny nose. Weird how kids his age can catch something so quick. Yesterday he was fine.
